Too Busy?….Who, me?

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

busy beeI smile as I look back in my mind over the time I was at home with my one-year-old child and felt so impossibly busy.  And to be sure, I was.  A few years later I was managing the lives of another infant and a toddler.  We were together at home.  My sister had teenagers by that time and she shared with me how busy my life would become during the teen years and the importance of my presence then more than ever.  I pondered that thought and tucked it away for future reference.  “Busier than now?”, I wondered.

As I find myself crossing the threshold of mother-of-teens I hear my sister’s words  clearly once again and remind myself to trust her guiding wisdom.  These are busy times!  I enjoy sharing in the variety of interests held by all members of the family (now five of us). I am charged with keeping track of their schedules, feeding daily, sending in checks on time and making sure there is always enough gas in the car! Did I mention that I’ve also collected some interests of my own along the way? I know I am not alone when I feel that life just keeps getting busier every year!

I wonder if I’m too busy to do it “all”.  That is what I pondered on my way out the door this morning to teach a yoga class.  Is there still time for yoga outside of the home?  A surprising question since this is the favorite aspect of my practice.  But it takes time away from the very long list of to-do’s that I have assembled for myself on a piece of paper by the back door. This list is there to remind myself of how busy I truly am!

I am now home from class at Seva this morning.  My list of things to do is still there.  Life has not changed.  But I most certainly have changed due to the practice we shared at the studio.  That escape – the practice of removing myself from “the race”, reuniting with the inner voice, releasing the hurried voices that were clogging up my body and knowing exactly who I am again has miraculously created space and time.  No, my schedule has not changed, but I have.  I think I’ll have time for a class tomorrow as well!
